Hi everyone!

We've had to back up our opening day just a bit to July 2nd.   We've been quite busy lately!   It was our daughter's wedding celebration last weekend, and we are starting our move from Green Bay to Cottage Grove!  Steve has accepted a new position near Madison to work for ATC starting the 23rd!

Right now, we're getting in kale and lettuce, lots of spring onions, and our first strawberries!  (Mmm...strawberry jam anyone?)  Everything is looking great and we're looking forward to seeing our lovely customers in just under a couple weeks!

Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in spring, and boy are ours doing well!  Ours are planted in a raised bed, which we mulch down with straw.  This helps stop weeds from growing, as well as keep dirt off the fruit.  It also minimizes water use, as it prevents the plant from becoming over-heated.  AND, it can improve soil quality (depending on the mulch) as it decomposes!  Here are some pictures of ours:

Some interesting facts I found about strawberries:

 

  • Strawberries are a member of the rose family.
  • Strawberries are low fat, low calorie; high in vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, potassium
  • Strawberries, as part of a 5 a day fruit & vegetable program, can help reduce the risk of cancer & heart attacks.
  • Eating strawberries, which are rich in nitrate, can increase the flow of blood & oxygen to the muscles by 7%.  This prevents muscle fatigue, making exercise easier.
  • In a test, subjects who ate nitrate rich foods like strawberries, before exercising burned 100 more calories than those who did not.

  • The average strawberry has 200 seeds.
  • Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside.

I also found out that as soon as a strawberry is picked, the natural sugar in the berries begins converting to starch.  As strawberries from the supermarket are picked early and transported for miles, they often have a grainy texture.  

 

We're hoping to have some homemade strawberry jam made and available for purchase at the end of June/beginning of July!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! This holiday weekend, we are busy getting things ready for the summer season.  Thankfully the rain has now stopped and we’re hoping to be able to get in the garden next week.  What are we working on, you ask?
